Welcome to Primary

Nottingham British School – Primary Phase

Welcome to the Primary phase at Nottingham British School, where children in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 embark on a purposeful journey of learning, growth, and discovery.

In Key Stage 1 (Years 1–2), we focus on building strong foundations in literacy, numeracy, and personal development. Our classrooms are warm, structured, and rich in opportunity—where routines support independence, and every child is encouraged to ask questions, take risks, and develop a love of learning.

In Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6), pupils deepen their knowledge across a broad and balanced curriculum. We prioritise subject integrity, coherence, and progression—ensuring that learning builds cumulatively and meaningfully. Our teachers work collaboratively to design lessons that challenge thinking, promote discussion, and foster resilience.

Across both key stages, we are committed to:

  • A coherent curriculum that connects knowledge and skills across subjects and year groups.
  • Evidence-informed teaching that reflects best practice and adapts to pupil needs.
  • A culture of kindness and ambition, where every child is known, valued, and supported to thrive.
  • Strong partnerships with families, built on trust, transparency, and shared purpose.

We believe that Primary education is not just preparation for the future—it is a vital stage in shaping confident, curious, and compassionate individuals. We are proud of our pupils, our staff, and the inclusive, aspirational culture we continue to build together.

Welcome message from the primary principal

Welcome to the Primary Stage

Mr. Attwan – Principal, Primary Phase

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Primary Stage at Nottingham British School—a place where East meets West, and where tradition and innovation walk hand in hand.

My own journey began in Egypt, where I completed my early education and developed a deep appreciation for the richness of Middle Eastern culture and values. I later moved to England, completing my high school and higher education in the beautiful county of Worcestershire, known for its green fields and quiet strength. I hold a BA in Education and the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) and began my teaching career in London before relocating to Kuwait.

Having lived and worked in the UK for over 20 years, I bring with me a profound understanding of the British Curriculum and the traditions that underpin it. At the same time, my roots and early life in the Middle East have given me a strong connection to the cultural heritage that shapes our families and communities here.

At Nottingham British School, we believe that children thrive when they are known, valued, and challenged. Our Primary phase—spanning Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2—is built on a coherent, well-sequenced curriculum that promotes academic rigour, personal growth, and cultural respect. We aim to nurture confident, compassionate learners who are proud of who they are and curious about the world around them.

We are proud to offer the benefits of a world-class British education while honouring the traditions and values that matter most to our families. Our school is a place of partnership—between home and school, between cultures, and between generations.

Thank you for entrusting us with your child’s education. I look forward to working closely with you as we shape a future that is both rooted and aspirational.

Kind Regards,
Mr. Mohamed Attwan
Principal – Primary Stage

Uniform expectations

Nottingham British School

At Nottingham British School, we believe that school uniform plays an important role in promoting a sense of identity, pride, and belonging. It reflects our commitment to high standards, mutual respect, and a focused learning environment.

 General Expectations

  • Pupils must arrive in full, clean uniform each day.
  • Uniform should be worn smartly and with pride, both in school and when representing the school externally.
  • All items should be clearly labelled with the pupil’s name.

 Appearance & Accessories

  • Hair should be neat and appropriate for school; extreme styles or colours are not permitted.
  • Jewellery is limited to small stud earrings; no necklaces, bracelets, or rings.
  • Nail polish and makeup are not permitted in Primary.
  • Pupils should bring a sensible school bag—large enough for books, lunch, and water bottle.

 Additional Notes

  • Pupils not in correct uniform may be issued a reminder or asked to change, depending on context.
  • Parents are encouraged to support the school’s expectations and contact the class teacher or reception via Edunation for any queries.
  • Uniform suppliers and guidance are available from the school office.

This policy supports our belief that a well-presented pupil is a confident learner. It also reflects our ethos: where East meets West, and where tradition and excellence go hand in hand.

 Teaching, Learning & Assessment

  • Curriculum Information Sheets (CIS): Each week, class teachers send out a CIS to parents. This outlines homework, subject plans for the coming week, and any other relevant updates—ensuring families are well-informed and engaged.
  • In-School Intervention: Targeted support is delivered during the school day to help pupils consolidate learning, close gaps, and build confidence.
  • End-of-Unit Quizzes: Regular low-stakes assessments are used to check understanding and inform teaching.
  • Summative Assessments: These take place twice a year—once in December and again in June—to evaluate pupil progress across the curriculum.

 Communication & Parent Engagement

  • Edunation Platform: All school communication is managed via Edunation. Parents are encouraged to check the platform regularly for updates, messages, and learning materials.
  • Weekly News Bulletin: Sent out every week to share key dates, school highlights, and important notices.
  • Appointments & Queries: Parents may contact their child’s teacher via Edunation or by phoning the school reception. Teachers aim to respond within 24 hours.
