Nottingham British School is a newly built and large school situated in the State of Kuwait. The school opened in September 2015 and truly is unique to other schools in the local area as the teaching staff are from countries with English as its first language including Britain, Canada, Australia and the USA.
It has interactive whiteboards in each of its large classrooms, an expansive outdoor play area, an indoor swimming pool, a purpose-built auditorium and is currently developing a learning support service for students with additional educational needs, which includes an intervention team and a school counsellor.
Our goal is to deliver an education system that is comparable to that of the UK, whereby students are taught through contextual, relevant and interactive learning opportunities, based upon transferable skills and a progressive approach to developing subject knowledge. The curriculum is split into 80% National Curriculum and 20% Kuwaiti Syllabus for Arabic and Islamic Studies, the latter delivered by Ministry approved specialist teachers from Kuwait. The class teachers’ timetable comprises of English, math, science, humanities, music, art, PE, design technology and computing. We currently have approximately 750 students enrolled at NBS and have a waiting list of students who have applied to join. We are lucky enough to have the capacity to expand immediately, once we have recruited more teachers. We also have a secondary school building, which can be opened when the first building is at capacity.
The majority of the students in our school have Arabic as their first language although the vast majority speak English well. We have a high intake of pupils of Egyptian and Kuwaiti heritage, but also host students from other backgrounds including Britain. Most of the learners at NBS come from Islamic families but those that do not, including several Arabic children, have a Study Support programme during the times that Islamic Studies is being taught in class. Provision is also provided for those that do not speak Arabic as a first language, during Arabic lessons.
Kuwait is a fairly moderate Islamic country that is host to a range of people from all over the world. It has some wonderful malls that offer high quality designer outlets and excellent world cuisine, beautiful beach resorts and various historical sites. It is situated in an ideal position for travelling and exploring many other parts of the world, relatively inexpensively- Bahrain, Qatar, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Oman, North Africa and Asia being the closest places. It is a great place for those who are interested in intercultural understanding, new languages and new and exciting experiences. It is a balance of traditional Arabic culture and the western world.
